What Is Dermaplaning? Everything You Need To Know.

It’s the most requested skin treatment and the hottest pre-red-carpet treatment, but what does dermaplaning actually do?

Dermaplaning is a gentle treatment that exfoliates your skin’s surface and removes peachfuzz—thereby helping you get the best results possible from other skin treatments and products. By removing dead skin cells and the soft facial hair that traps dirt and oil, you are able to apply makeup more evenly and are left with smoother, softer skin.

While dermaplaning is a trendy procedure offered by a number of local spas and skin centers, PLEIJ Salon + Spa is a leading dermaplane provider in Columbus, Ohio with skilled providers who frequently perform this procedure.

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a non-invasive physical exfoliation that uses a sterile dermaplaning wand to gently shave off the top superficial layer of skin, removing the dead skin and vellus hairs, commonly referred to as peachfuzz. This treatment reveals ultra smooth, fresh brighter skin. The effects on the skin are immediate, and it can help skin-care products sink in better and makeup go on smoother.

How Dermaplaning will Benefit You

A dermaplane treatment on its own will result in soft, smooth, and luminous skin. You’ll notice immediate improvements in texture and clarity, and your makeup will glide on like never before! But for the BEST results combine it with our other targeted facial treatments to boost their efficacy AND your at home skincare!

Additional benefits of dermaplaning include:

  • Removes soft facial hair that traps dirt and oils
  • Promotes smoother skin
  • Reduces the appearance of acne scars
  • Increases the rate of cell turnover
  • Diminishes the look of fine lines
  • Gives a more even skin tone
  • Increases the effectiveness of skincare products
  • Instant results and no downtime

Who is a Candidate for Dermaplaning?

This treatment is perfect for almost all skin types except those with severe rosacea and/or active acne (because it could worsen the condition). By removing the dead skin you are less likely to get fine lines and wrinkles, which is perfect for those who want to avoid aging for as long as they possibly can.

That said, when it comes to exfoliating peels versus dermaplaning, peels provide deeper exfoliation and are better suited to help to improve texture, tone, acne, and fine lines.

Will My Facial Hair Grow Back Darker?

Part of the appeal of a dermaplane treatment is the removal of fine facial hair. Unlike waxing or threading, the hair is not removed from the root, and will continue to grow back at its normal pace.

Hair will NOT grow in faster, darker, or thicker. Dermaplaning does not affect the number of hair follicles you have or their thickness. It is important to know there are two different types of hair on our bodies, vellus hair and terminal hair. Vellus hair is most often located on our face and ear lobes and is translucent or blonde. This type of hair cannot change into terminal hair and will not come back thicker and more visible.

How Often Can I Receive Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning can be done every 4-6 weeks. It is highly recommended that you allow your skin to complete its full rejuvenation cycle before you go in for your next treatment. Over exfoliation can cause unintended consequences that can easily be avoided by following the scheduling advice of your skincare professional.

What to Expect After the Treatment

You do not need to plan any downtime to recover after a dermaplaning treatment. You may experience redness but after that has subsided you will notice your skin looks brighter after the treatment.

Results are not permanent so you will need to come in every 4-6 weeks for a dermaplaning treatment. You will also need to protect your skin with sunscreen as your skin will be more sensitive to exposure, and sun damage can reverse the effects of dermaplaning. You’ll also want to be cautious of retinol and glycolic acids which again your skin will be more sensitive to. Lastly never do this procedure at home as you can potentially damage your skin further.
